Joomla is fast becoming a leader application for social networking. A few weeks ago Ning, a popular social networking site provider, announced it will be switching to a paid model and shutting down its free sites. Amongst the top alternative solutions suggested by its community members were Joomla! social extensions, including Tuiyo. 1. JomSocial (Stable, Commercial)
JoomSocial is one of the most widely used social extensions on the Joomla 1.5 platform. Offers the possibility to create custom user profiles, upload photos, create groups, and lots more. This application is currently not free, but a subscription based version has been recently announced.
2. Community Builder (Stable, Free)
Community Builder suite (CB) extends the Joomla! user management system. Key features: extra fields in profile, enhanced registration workflows, user lists, connection paths between users, admin defined tabs and user profiles, image upload, front-end workflow management, integration with other components, like PMS, Newsletter, Forum, Galleries. Anahita is one of the latest addition to the Joomla social community and groupware extension arsenal. Powered by the nooku framework, Anahita prides itself with a great deal of flexibility, robustness and a viable platform on which to build on. Anahita is still under active development but preview versions are already available to registered patners.
4. jSocialSuite (Release Candidate, Commercial)
Developed from a blank slate this extension was built based on new ideas as well as feedback and consultation with the Joomla! development community and jVitals clients and members. With unprecedented openness and confidence the community was invited to test drive jSocialSuite in Pre-Alpha on http://jvitals.com, allowing the members to see the development and feed back their opinions immediately.
